Gardening and Back Health

With the warm weather finally here and summer right around the corner, many people have started their summer gardens. Many people fail to realize that gardening is a form of exercise and, as with all exercise, it is important to prepare with warm-ups before and cool-downs after to help prevent injuries.

Over the last two weeks, the Centre has seen an uptick in patients needing treatment for back injuries sustained while gardening. Here are some tips to help with prevention:

  1. Warm up first with a short walk or light stretches.
  2. Bend at the knees and hips rather than your waist.
  3. Avoid twisting while lifting or carrying.
  4. Change positions frequently and take regular stretch breaks.
  5. Use long-handled or ergonomic tools whenever possible.
  6. Pace yourself! Spread your project over multiple days.
  7. Stay hydrated.

Remember, gardening should be enjoyable, not painful. Taking a few extra precautions can help keep your back healthy so you can enjoy your garden all season long.

If pain persists after gardening, seek professional advice before a minor strain becomes a more significant injury.

At Sharbot Lake Chiropractic & Wellness Centre, we help relieve back, neck, and joint pain so you can stay active and enjoy the season.
